ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸದ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಏಕಾದಶಿ ಇಂದು (ಜುಲೈ 10) ಈ ಏಕಾದಶಿಯನ್ನು 'ದೇವಶಯನಿ' ಏಕಾದಶಿ ಎಂದೂ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಏಕಾದಶಿಗೂ ಬಹಳ ಮಹತ್ವವಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಕ್ಯಾಲೆಂಡರ್‌ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕಾದಶಿ ತಿಥಿ ಎರಡು ಬಾರಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ. ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಟ್ಟು 24 ಏಕಾದಶಿಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸದ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಏಕಾದಶಿಯನ್ನು ದೇವಶಯನಿ ಏಕಾದಶಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಈ ಏಕಾದಶಿ ದಿನಾಂಕದಂದು, ಭಗವಾನ್ ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿವನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಈ ವರ್ಷ ದೇವಶಯನಿ ಏಕಾದಶಿ ಜುಲೈ 10 ರಂದು ಅಂದರೆ ಇದೇ ದಿನ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಏಕಾದಶಿ ತಿಥಿಯು ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣುವಿಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದದ್ದು. ಈ ದಿನದಂದು ಭಗವಾನ್ ವಿಷ್ಣುವನ್ನು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೋಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಬೇಕು. ದೇವಶಯನಿ ಏಕಾದಶಿಯ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಪಟ್ಟಿ, ಮಂಗಳಕರ ಸಮಯ, ಪೂಜಾ ವಿಧಾನ, ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಸ್ತು ಮುಂತಾದವುಗಳ ವಿವರ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

The Palki of Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu, Palki of Sant Dnyaneshwar from Alandi and numerous other Palki (Palanquin) carrying the silver Padukas of various saints arrives at Lord Vitthal Temple in Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadasi after a 21-day journey. Lord Vitthal is an incarnation of Lord Krishna and is a popular deity in Marathi culture. This Ekadasi is popularly known as 'Devshayani Ekadasi'.
The day is of great significance to the Bhakti cult in Maharashtra. Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar two of the great Bhakti exponents in Maharashtra reached the abode of Lord Vitthal in Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadasi. They had set out on foot around fifteen days before the auspicious day from their villages. Sant Tukaram started from Dehu village near Pune and Sant Dnyaneshwar from Alandi. They walked on foot singing the praise of Lord Vitthal and reached the shrine on the auspicious day for the darshan of the Lord.
In memory of this pilgrimage, Maharashtrians undertake Dindi Yatra or Pandharpur Yatra by foot to the Pandharpur shrine of Vitthala. The devotees are known Varkaris and they go in a procession carrying the ‘palki’ of Sant Tukaram and Sant Jnaneshwar.
The day is also of great importance in several other places. Thousands of devotees also take a holy dip in Godavari River on the day and pay obeisance to Lord Rama at Kalaram temple.
This Ekadasi is observed as Toli Ekadasi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Tapta Mudra Dharana – Wearing of Heated Seals on Body - observed by Vaishnava mutts takes place on the day. Chaturmasya Vrata begins from this day in many regions in India.
